3 Studies That Prove Minoxidil Works – And Can Work for You

Many people believe that when men lose their hair, it’s just “natural.” No big deal. Men should just grin and bear it: after all, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Billy Zane, and the sexiest of all, Mr. Clean, all turn heads with their bald heads. But the truth is that losing one’s hair can be a difficult process; for men, it can be closely associated with a perceived loss of youth, energy, and virility. Thanks to scientific advances, though, men have safe, effective options to combat hair loss. Research proves that the consistent use of Minoxidil results in noticeable hair regrowth.

What does the science have to say about Minoxidil? Here’s a look at four studies proving its efficacy:

• Dr. Elise Arline Olsen, director and founder of the Duke Dermatopharmacology Study Center, conducted a 48-week double-blind, placebo-controlled study comparing the use of 5% topical minoxidil with that of 2% topical minoxidil and placebo. The participants were 393 men age 18-49 with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) .

The team found that the 5% solution was “significantly superior” to the 2% solution and placebo; specifically, response to treatment was faster and men achieved 45% more hair regrowth. Interestingly – but not, perhaps, surprisingly – 5% minoxidil included improved “psychosocial perceptions of hair loss.” When you see minoxidil Rogaine results pictures, what you cannot see is the change that takes place in people’s self-confidence. It is no less important – and no less attractive.

• Johnson & Johnson Consumer and Personal Products Worldwide sponsored a 16-week study which examined the efficacy and safety of 5% minoxidil. The men had AGA; the study was randomized so some subjects used 5% minoxidil foam twice daily for 16 weeks, while other subjects were given a placebo.

The team compared baseline photographs with minoxidil results pictures at week 16. They too, found that the 5% solution was “statistically significantly superior” to placebo. Further, the foam was well tolerated and no safety concerns were raised during the trial.

• Finally, we have two Phase IV studies conducted by physicians in Germany and funded by Pfizer. Phase IV, or after-market studies, are undertaken after a product has been approved and in use by patients. A one year observational study looked at 984 men with AGA. At the end of the year: hair loss areas became smaller in the majority of men; the 5% minoxidil solution was judged “very effective” in 15.9% of men, “effective” in 47.8%, and somewhat effective in 20.6%.

In a four-month observational study of 743 men with AGA, it was revealed that the affected scalp areas were smaller in most participants. Minoxidil also effectively stimulated hair regrowth in a majority, and nearly 75% reported better density. While some men saw Rogaine results in the first month, most experienced visible results in months two and three.

These studies prove that positive minoxidil results are experienced by a majority of men with AGA. Will it work for you? You owe it to yourself to find out.
